Business trip to Kaunas: where to sleep well and get work done

Underground Kingdom Boutique lounge with brick arches, a crystal chandelier and a marble compass-rose floor, Kaunas

In short: on a business trip to Kaunas, what matters is a good night's sleep, no stress about arriving late, and an invoice your accounts team will accept. For one or two travellers, the quiet Underground Kingdom Boutique rooms in the city centre are the best fit; if you need to work from your room, Picturesque Old Town Apartment has fast Wi-Fi; for a longer stay, the spacious Old Town Pearl Suite. All three have self check-in, so you can arrive on the last train.

A typical work trip to Kaunas goes like this: an early train from Vilnius or a flight into Vilnius Airport, meetings until the evening, a late dinner, and back to work the next morning. You do not need a hotel reception for a day like that. What you need is a door that opens whenever you get there, a room that is genuinely quiet, and a short walk to your first meeting in the morning. Below: how to choose where to stay, how to get here, and what Kaunas has to offer once the laptop is closed.

What a business traveller actually needs

  • Quiet. After a long day, sleep is everything. Old Town streets stay lively into the night, so it pays to know which windows face the terraces — and where you will not hear the street at all.
  • Self check-in. Trains run late and meetings overrun. With access instructions sent in advance, your arrival time is your own business.
  • Location. Most business meetings in Kaunas happen in the centre, the New Town or the Old Town. From all three of our stays you can walk to Laisvės alėja and the Old Town.
  • A decent connection. A video call from your room or a report in the evening is part of the job. All three stays have Wi-Fi.
  • An invoice. Book direct and the invoice with your company details comes straight from us, with no middleman.

Which stay suits which trip

One or two travellers, one or a few nights: quiet rooms under the vaults

For a solo traveller or two colleagues, the best match is Underground Kingdom Boutique — a small hotel in 1908 brick vaults at the junction of Laisvės alėja, Vilniaus street, Savanorių prospektas and Šv. Gertrūdos street. This is where the City Centre, the Old Town and Žaliakalnis meet, so most meetings are a walk away. Every room has a double bed, its own shower and WC, air conditioning, a fridge and a kettle with tea and coffee, and Room 2 adds a kitchenette. There are no windows down here — and so no street noise either: an underground room is a pocket of real silence in the middle of the city, and you sleep accordingly. Fresh air comes from mechanical ventilation with heat recovery. Colleagues can book two separate rooms, each with its own door and bathroom, while the 35 m² lounge works for a quick evening debrief.

Working from your room: Picturesque with fast Wi-Fi

If the trip means hours at the laptop as well as meetings, an apartment makes sense. Picturesque Old Town Apartment is a 45 m² flat on M. Valančiaus street, in the heart of the Old Town and about 300 m from Town Hall Square. It has fast 328 Mbps Wi-Fi, two separate bedrooms, a fully equipped kitchen with a dishwasher and an espresso machine, a washer, a dryer and a steam iron — so tomorrow's shirt will be meeting-ready. Between calls, step out onto the balcony over a cobbled Old Town street.

A longer trip or an important visit: Old Town Pearl Suite

When the trip lasts several days, or you travel with a partner, a colleague or family, Old Town Pearl Suite is the one: an 84 m² apartment in a new 2024 building with a lift, about 250 m from Kaunas Castle. Two bedrooms, a living room with a state-of-the-art kitchen, a bathroom with both a walk-in shower and a bathtub, a washing machine, and a balcony looking over the centre to the river. The minimum stay is two nights.

Getting here: train, bus, plane or car

By train or bus. From Vilnius, the LTG Link train is the quickest: the express takes from 59 minutes, regular trains about 1 h 10–20 min. The bus takes around an hour and a half. The Kaunas railway and bus stations sit side by side in the New Town, and a taxi or Bolt is the easiest way into the centre. City bus No. 29 links both stations with the "E. Ožeškienės g." stop by Laisvės alėja, about 150 m from the Underground Kingdom entrance. Every route is in our guide on how to get to Kaunas.

From Vilnius Airport. Most international flights land in Vilnius. From there, the direct Ollex bus to Kaunas runs on a schedule timed to flights and takes about 1 h 15 min. Buses, trains and taxis are covered in our Vilnius Airport to Kaunas guide. If you fly straight into Kaunas, see Kaunas Airport to the Old Town.

By car. None of the stays has a private car park; parking is on the street. For business travellers the most convenient option is the green zone on Šv. Gertrūdos street near Underground Kingdom: it is charged only on weekdays 08:00–18:00, so if you arrive in the evening and leave in the morning, the night costs nothing. By the Old Town apartments the Old Town zone is charged around the clock, so for an overnight stay it is worth leaving the car across the Vytautas the Great Bridge on Marvelės street, where parking is free. More in our Old Town parking guide.

Arriving late: no reception, no waiting

All three stays have self check-in. Before you arrive we send detailed access instructions, and on the day the host answers on WhatsApp if anything goes wrong. Check-in is from 15:00 and check-out until 11:00, which leaves time for an unhurried coffee before your last meeting. At Underground Kingdom you enter through a private door straight from the street. If you decide to stay the night on the day itself, Underground Kingdom accepts same-day bookings until 21:00. Arriving late, please mind the quiet hours, 22:00–08:00.

After work: the Kaunas worth seeing

A business trip does not have to mean an evening in front of the TV. Laisvės alėja turns into a strolling street at night, Vilniaus street leads into the Old Town, and the floodlit Town Hall Square and Kaunas Castle are within walking distance. For dinner, pick a tried-and-tested place from our guide on where to eat in Kaunas Old Town; if you feel like staying out, there are the cellar bars and nightlife. Ideas for a free evening are in things to do in Kaunas, and concerts and games at Žalgirio Arena in events in Kaunas. From Underground Kingdom the arena is a short walk, so getting back after the event is easy.

Kaunas shows a business traveller its best side once the work is done: a walk along Laisvės alėja, dinner in the Old Town, a quiet night and an unhurried morning before the next meeting. That is reason enough to stay the night rather than rush for the last train. For more on neighbourhoods and stays, see our guide on where to stay in Kaunas.
