Underground Kingdom Boutique sits in 1908 vaults where five streets and three districts of Kaunas meet — the Old Town, the Centre and Žaliakalnis.

Wrought-iron staircase leading down to the 1908 brick vaults — Underground Kingdom, Kaunas

There are many good addresses in Kaunas, but only one place where the whole city meets. Underground Kingdom Boutique occupies the brick vaults of a building from 1908, at the junction where five main streets cross and three districts — the Old Town, the Centre and Žaliakalnis — touch.

A building with the spirit of 1908

The building is one of the oldest surviving buildings of its kind in this part of Kaunas. It went up in 1908, when Kaunas was still a fortress town of the Russian Empire — a decade before it became Lithuania's temporary capital. Its cellars have kept the character of that era: red-brick arches and vaults, a wrought-iron staircase leading down from the street, and unique interior details you will not find in a newly built hotel.

Today the vaults hold four private rooms, each with its own bathroom, arranged around a 35 m² candle-lit lounge with a marble compass-rose floor, crystal chandeliers and antique furniture. A fifth room is opening soon. Because the rooms are below street level, the traffic of the crossroads above is completely inaudible.

Five streets and three districts in one spot

Five main streets meet at the entrance: Laisvės alėja (the city's main pedestrian boulevard), Vilniaus gatvė (the main street of the Old Town), Savanorių prospektas, Šv. Gertrūdos gatvė and E. Ožeškienės gatvė.

This is also where the Old Town (Senamiestis), the Centre (Centras) and the green hill district of Žaliakalnis meet. There is no other spot like it in Kaunas: one step takes you onto the cobbles of the Old Town, another onto the boulevard of the modern centre, and the funicular up to Žaliakalnis is a short walk away.
