Illustration: an evening in the brick cellars of Kaunas Old Town

An evening in Kaunas usually means Vilniaus gatvė and Town Hall Square in the Old Town, then Laisvės alėja in the centre. For a drink underground, start with Avilys (Vilniaus g. 34), a brewery restaurant in 18th-century cellars, or Gaston (M. Valančiaus g. 7), a wine bar in 17th-century cellars. Klimas on Town Hall Square adds cocktails under historic vaults until 02:00 or 03:00.

This guide lists only venues we could confirm are open in 2026, through their own websites, booking pages or recent events. Each one has an address and what it is known for. Opening hours are given only where the venue publishes them. Bars in Kaunas open and close often, so check the venue's page on the day.

Where the evening happens: Vilniaus gatvė and Laisvės alėja

Vilniaus gatvė is the oldest street in Kaunas Old Town and was once part of the road to Vilnius. It is closed to cars, most of its buildings date from the 16th century, and the Cathedral Basilica stands on it. It leads to Town Hall Square, and two of the venues below are on it or on the square.

Laisvės alėja, the main boulevard of the centre, is about 1.6 km long and has been closed to traffic since 1982. Cars can cross it only at intersections. It runs from St Michael the Archangel's Church to the junction with Vilniaus gatvė, past the Musical Theatre and the National Drama Theatre at No. 71. Cafés and restaurants line it, some of them open late.

The two streets meet at the edge of the Old Town, so you can walk the whole evening. Allow about 15 minutes on foot from the junction to Town Hall Square.

Venues in historic cellars and vaults

Avilys: a brewery in 18th-century cellars

Avilys (Vilniaus g. 34) is a restaurant and brewery set in 18th-century cellars. It brews unfiltered, unpasteurised beer on site, including a honey beer, and offers brewery tours and tastings. The kitchen serves European dishes with Lithuanian ingredients; the signature list includes cheese fritters, beer soup and duck with beetroot. It is open daily from 12:00, until midnight from Sunday to Thursday and until 02:00 on Friday and Saturday. Tables can be booked online, which is worth doing for a weekend dinner.

Gaston: wine in 17th-century cellars

Gaston (M. Valančiaus g. 7, with a second entrance at Raguvos g. 11) describes itself as a wine house in authentic 17th-century cellars. It combines a wine shop with a wine bar and stocks more than 800 wines, from large producers to small family estates. It is open Monday to Saturday, 12:00–20:00, and closed on Sundays, so it is a place to start the evening rather than finish it.

Gaston also runs ticketed tastings at 18:00, each lasting up to two hours. The autumn 2026 programme includes Beaujolais Nouveau on 19 November (€45), French wine on 25 November (€55), wine in films on 27 November (€65) and Italian red wine on 4 December (€60). The three November tastings were already sold out in late October.

Klimas: cocktails on Town Hall Square

Klimas (Rotušės a. 3) is a cocktail bar named after Petras Klimas, a signatory of Lithuania's Act of Independence and later foreign minister. Its theme is 1920s Kaunas, with jazz and wine from the Prohibition era as a reference. It is known for classic and local cocktails. In the cold months guests sit under its historic vaults; in summer, on a terrace with views of the Old Town. It opens at 18:00 and closes at 02:00 from Monday to Wednesday and at 03:00 from Thursday to Sunday.

Craft beer

Besides Avilys, two places cover beer well. Hop Doc (V. Sladkevičiaus g. 2) is an Old Town gastropub with more than 100 beers from around the world and handmade burgers. It opens at 17:00 on weekdays and at 12:00 on Saturday and Sunday, and closes at 23:00 on Sunday and Monday, at midnight from Tuesday to Thursday, and at 01:00 on Friday and Saturday.

Volfas Engelman Galerija (Kaunakiemio g. 2) is a restaurant above the brewing kettles of the Volfas Engelman brewery, outside the Old Town. It serves the brewery's beer, runs tours and tastings, and hosts events and live sports broadcasts. On 8 October 2026 it opened the Kaunas Blues festival. It does not publish hours in the sources we checked, so look them up before you go.

Wine

For wine, start at Gaston in the late afternoon: it is a wine shop and bar in one, with more than 800 wines in a 17th-century cellar. Because it closes at 20:00, a ticketed tasting at 18:00 is the easiest way to spend a full evening there. After 20:00, Klimas and Avilys on Town Hall Square and Vilniaus gatvė are a few minutes away on foot. For dinner before or after, see our guide to where to eat in Kaunas Old Town.

Live music and jazz

  • Kaunas Jazz. The festival is in its 36th season in 2026. Its season concert is Candy Dulfer and her band at Žalgiris Arena on 14 December at 19:00, with tickets from €34.90 to €72.90 on bilietai.lt.
  • Kaunas Blues. The 2026 edition took place from 8 to 10 October at Volfas Engelman Galerija, the Kaunas Sports Hall and the railway station district. It is worth checking for next autumn.
  • Puppet Theatre evenings. The Kaunas State Puppet Theatre on Laisvės alėja is not only for children. On 5 November at 19:00 the Vytautas V. Landsbergis Trio plays the concert Apie paukščius (€26). On 11 and 17 November at 18:30 it stages Rudnosiukas ir jo moterys, a concert-play for ages 16+ (€22). On 29 December at 18:30 there is a Christmas concert (€23).

Safety and practical tips

  • Carry ID. The legal age for buying and drinking alcohol in Lithuania is 20, raised from 18 in 2018. Take a passport or ID card in case you are asked for proof of age.
  • Getting home. Bolt is widely used in Lithuania, and ordering a ride or taxi through an app shows the price before you go. Laisvės alėja is closed to cars, so set the pick-up point on a cross street.
  • Mind the cobbles. Many Old Town streets are cobbled. Flat shoes are safer late at night, especially in rain.
  • Respect quiet hours. The Old Town is a residential area as well as a nightlife district. Our stays have quiet hours from 22:00 to 08:00, so keep voices down in stairwells and courtyards on the way back.
  • Book at weekends. Avilys takes reservations online, and Gaston's three November tastings had sold out by late October.
  • Plan the order. Wine at Gaston before 20:00, dinner at Avilys, then cocktails at Klimas, which stays open latest.

For a full weekend plan, see 48 hours in Kaunas Old Town. For the history of the crossroads where Laisvės alėja meets Vilniaus gatvė, read the 1908 vaults at the Kaunas crossroads. To compare places to stay, see the Old Town hotel page.

Venues, hours, prices and dates were checked on the venues' and organisers' own pages in October 2026. Bars change hours and programmes often, so confirm before you go.

Frequently asked questions

Where is the nightlife in Kaunas?

Most evenings happen on two walkable axes. Vilniaus gatvė, the pedestrian street through the Old Town, leads to Town Hall Square and its bars and cellars. Laisvės alėja, a pedestrian boulevard of about 1.6 km, has the theatres, pubs and late cafés. The two streets meet, so one evening can cover both.

Are there bars in historic cellars in Kaunas?

Yes. Avilys at Vilniaus g. 34 is a restaurant and brewery in 18th-century cellars that brews its own unfiltered beer. Gaston at M. Valančiaus g. 7 is a wine shop and wine bar in 17th-century cellars with evening tastings. Klimas on Town Hall Square serves cocktails under historic vaults.

What is the legal drinking age in Lithuania?

It is 20. Since 1 January 2018 it has been illegal to sell or serve alcohol to anyone under 20, and people under 20 may not drink or carry it. Carry a passport or national ID card in the evening in case staff ask for proof of age.

How do I get back to my stay late at night in Kaunas?

Order a Bolt or a taxi through an app, which shows the price before you ride. Laisvės alėja is closed to cars, so arrange the pick-up on a cross street. Within the Old Town most venues are a few minutes apart on foot, and the cobbles are easier in flat shoes.

Where can I hear live jazz in Kaunas?

The Kaunas Jazz festival runs its 36th season in 2026, and its season concert with Candy Dulfer and her band is at Žalgiris Arena on 14 December at 19:00, with tickets from €34.90. The Puppet Theatre on Laisvės alėja also hosts evening concerts for adults, including a trio concert on 5 November.

Is Kaunas Old Town noisy at night?

Some venues stay open late: Avilys on Vilniaus gatvė until 02:00 on Fridays and Saturdays, and Klimas on Town Hall Square until 03:00 from Thursday to Sunday. The Old Town is also a residential area, so expect late voices on the main streets. Our stays have quiet hours from 22:00 to 08:00.
