Two unhurried days are the perfect length for Kaunas Old Town. Day one is for the squares, spires and riverside; day two for markets and museums — and everything is a 5–10 minute walk, so you never need a taxi.

Kaunas Old Town (Senamiestis) is small enough to explore on foot and rich enough to fill a long weekend. Two unhurried days are the sweet spot: enough time for the headline sights and the quiet corners locals love. Here is the itinerary we share with our own guests.

Day one — squares, spires and the riverside

Start at Town Hall Square, the white-stuccoed heart of the Old Town. Circle the square slowly, then step into the Gothic-brick Kaunas Cathedral a minute away. From there, wander west toward the confluence of the Nemunas and Neris rivers — the literal point where the city began. The riverside path is flat, shaded and perfect for a morning coffee to go.

Spend the afternoon on Vilniaus gatvė, the pedestrian spine connecting the Old Town to the New Town. It is lined with cafés, independent shops and courtyards worth ducking into. Finish the day with dinner near the square and a nightcap in one of the cellar bars beneath the cobbles.

Day two — markets, museums and a slower pace

Begin with a relaxed breakfast, then choose your depth: history lovers can give a morning to the Kaunas Castle ruins and the museums around the square, while everyone else can simply drift between bakeries and terraces. Mid-afternoon, cross to the funicular or the riverfront for a different view of the rooftops.

The beauty of basing yourself in the Old Town is that nothing requires a taxi — your bed is a five-minute walk from every recommendation above.
