Town Hall Square is the heart of Kaunas Old Town, and almost everything worth doing is within a 5-minute walk — the “White Swan” Town Hall tower, Baroque churches, café terraces, cellar bars and the Cathedral.
If you do one thing in Kaunas, make it Town Hall Square. The elegant white tower nicknamed the “White Swan” presides over a plaza ringed with terraces, churches and centuries of merchant history. Almost everything below is within a five-minute stroll.
On the square itself
- Admire the Town Hall and circle the square at golden hour, when the stucco glows.
- Step inside the Church of St Francis Xavier for the Baroque interior.
- Browse the seasonal stalls and pop-up markets that appear on weekends.
A few minutes away
Walk a block in any direction and the crowds thin. To the east, Kaunas Cathedral anchors the skyline; to the north, the Kaunas Castle ruins sit beside the river. Vilniaus gatvė runs east toward cafés and bookshops, while the lanes south of the square hide quiet courtyards, galleries and some of the best coffee in town.
Coffee, cake and a slow afternoon
The Old Town rewards lingering. Claim a terrace table, order something local, and watch the square do its thing. When the light drops, the cellar bars beneath the cobbles open — a fitting end to a day that never needed a car.
