The best time to visit Kaunas depends on your mood: summer for long terrace evenings, autumn for golden light and thin crowds, winter for lights and cosy cellars, spring for blossom. Here is what each season brings to the Old Town.
There is no wrong time to visit Kaunas — only different moods. Here is what each season brings to the Old Town, so you can choose the one that suits you.
Spring & summer: terraces and long evenings
From late spring the squares fill with café terraces and the riverside paths come alive. Summer evenings are long and warm, perfect for a slow walk from the Town Hall to the confluence of the rivers. This is peak season, so book your stay early.
Autumn: golden light and quiet streets
Autumn might be the Old Town at its most photogenic — golden leaves along the cobbles, softer light and noticeably thinner crowds. Bring a light coat, and you will have the Gothic façades almost to yourself.
Winter: lights, markets and warm cellars
Winter wraps Kaunas in lights and the occasional Christmas market, and the Old Town’s vaulted cellars feel especially inviting against the cold. Days are short, so plan a cosy itinerary built around cafés and a candlelit dinner.
In 2026 the main Christmas tree on Town Hall Square will be lit on Friday, 27 November at 18:00. The Old Town fills up that evening, so staying in the centre means you can simply walk there and skip the search for parking.
Whenever you come, stay in the heart of it
Each season is best enjoyed on foot from the centre — exactly where all three of our stays sit:
